“It’s always been about the food. From the day we started The Gate in 1989, we’ve been passionate about how food is made and how we can communicate our passion and educate the public about healthy-eating and using more vegetable-based dishes. We’re also interested in the evolution of veganism. We started out as vegetarian in Hammersmith and now we have three restaurants in London and our menus are ninety per cent vegan. Our owner is also passionate about foraging and this is reflected on our menu.”
Wild mushroom rotolo; aubergine schnitzel; and miso-glazed aubergine.
Leading the way since 1989 with their deep and meaningful commitment to vegetarianism and veganism, The Gate has taken caring to another level now with their work alongside Ambitious about Autism. They are supporting and training children with autism by making them more self-sufficient, for instance teaching them how to produce chocolate, pack it, sell it, and market it. But most impressive is the way staff are trained to spot and give the right kind of service to customers with autism, explaining menus in an accessible way, recognizing the different needs of their customers, and providing a quiet space for anyone experiencing stress in what can be a challenging environment. An example to us all.
“It’s hard to choose from their tempting menu, which includes spinach, feta and artichoke tart, but I particularly like their crispy-coated aubergine – it’s delicious.” –Rose Elliot, The Telegraph
